Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, offering visitors a rare chance to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a briefing from experienced park rangers. You’ll then hike through dense rainforest, guided by trackers who locate gorilla families. The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location, but the reward is worth every step — spending a magical hour just a few meters away from a gorilla family.
To trek gorillas in Uganda, you need a permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
- Permit cost: around $700 USD per person
- It’s highly recommended to book in advance, especially during peak seasons
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the best time is during the dry seasons:
- June to September
- December to February
Unlike other destinations, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers a more intimate and less crowded trekking experience. The park’s rich biodiversity also includes hundreds of bird species, butterflies, and unique plant life, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
